What the job had to solve
A staircase is a high-traffic surface with two finishes meeting on every step. The line between stained tread and painted riser has to be clean on all of them, and the house still has to be usable while the finish cures.

How the work ran
- 1Protect the adjoining floor and seal off the work area.
- 2Sand the treads back so the stain takes evenly rather than blotching.
- 3Stain and build the tread finish, checking colour across the whole flight.
- 4Prime and paint the risers and stringers, cutting the line by hand.
- 5Set the railing and newel, and stage the work so the stair stays usable.
The result
A stair with an even tread colour, clean paint lines on every riser and a railing that is solid to the post.
