Living Room Ceiling Repair and Refinish
A large living-room ceiling taken back to a flat, unbroken plane, with the recessed lighting reset and the finish carried wall to wall.
What the job had to solve
Ceilings show everything. A patch that would disappear on a wall reads from across the room once daylight rakes across it, and this ceiling is wide open with windows on two sides. Old repairs, cracked joints and the cut-outs around recessed cans all had to end up invisible.
Work performed
- Cut out compromised and previously patched board
- Re-secure the ceiling to framing where fasteners had let go
- Re-tape and rebuild failed joints rather than skimming over them
- Multiple finish coats with sanding between
- Cut-ins reset around recessed lighting and the HVAC register
- Stain-blocking primer and finish paint across the full plane

How the work ran
- 1Protect the furniture and floor, and confirm nothing above the ceiling is still leaking before any finish work starts.
- 2Remove the damaged board and open the failed joints back to sound material.
- 3Re-secure, re-tape and build the joints back with multiple coats.
- 4Sand under raking light so nothing telegraphs when the sun comes across.
- 5Prime with a stain blocker and finish the whole plane so there is no patch line.
The result
One flat ceiling with no visible repair, and lighting and vents sitting clean in the finished surface.
