What the job had to solve

A room used for recording has to hold sound in and keep the building out. Standard partitions and a bare ceiling let HVAC noise, footfall from the next suite and street noise straight through, and every seam and penetration in the assembly is a path for it.

Work performed

  • Sound-rated wall assemblies with sealed perimeters and penetrations
  • Metal-stud framing for new partitions
  • Drywall hang, tape and finish, sanded flat for paint
  • Suspended acoustic ceiling grid and tile
  • Luxury vinyl plank flooring with vinyl cove base
  • Full prime and finish paint
  • Door and hardware set for the room opening

How the work ran

  1. 1Walk the space and confirm what the room needs to do, then agree the wall and ceiling assemblies that get it there.
  2. 2Frame the partitions and rough in the openings.
  3. 3Build the sound-rated assemblies, sealing perimeters, outlets and every other penetration rather than leaving them to the finish trades.
  4. 4Hang, tape and finish the drywall, then set the ceiling grid.
  5. 5Lay flooring and base, paint, and hang the door.

The result

A finished, usable studio room: quiet, flat walls ready for treatment, an acoustic ceiling, and flooring and paint that are done, not "close enough".
