What is a Level 5 drywall finish?
Level 5 is the highest of the six drywall finish levels. It adds a thin skim coat of joint compound across the entire surface, not just over the seams and fasteners, so the whole wall has one uniform texture and porosity. You need it where light rakes across a wall, where the paint has any sheen, and on large flat ceilings.
Six levels, and what each one means
The levels describe how much finishing work has been done, and they are an industry standard rather than a marketing term.
Level 0 is bare board. Level 1 is tape set in compound, used above ceilings and inside plenums where nobody sees it. Level 2 is a skim over the tape, used in garages and warehouses. Level 3 takes another coat and suits heavy texture. Level 4 is the normal residential finish, with the joints and screws coated and sanded smooth. Level 5 adds the skim coat over everything.
Why the skim coat exists at all
Joint compound and paper facing absorb paint differently. On a Level 4 wall the seams have compound on them and the field between the seams does not, so when a glossy or semi gloss paint goes on, the seams read as faint bands under the right light. Painters call it joint banding or photographing.
The skim coat puts the same material across the whole surface, so the paint sits on one substrate and dries to one sheen.
Worth paying for
Walls lit from the side by a window or a wall washer. Long hallways with a light at one end. Large flat ceilings, which are the worst case because ceilings get raking daylight all day. Anything painted in eggshell, satin, semi gloss or a dark saturated colour, all of which show more than flat white does.
Also worth it in a room you have already repaired several times. Years of patches leave a lumpy plane, and skimming the whole surface is what makes it read flat again.
Not worth paying for
A bedroom in flat paint with light coming from the ceiling fixture does not need Level 5. Neither does a closet, a utility room, or any surface getting a heavy texture over it.
