Can you match my existing wall texture?

Usually yes. Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel and smooth are all matchable, and a good match makes a repair disappear without repainting the room. What decides it is not the texture itself but how much the surrounding wall has changed since that texture went on.

How a match is actually done

The texture gets sprayed or trowelled onto the patch and then worked to the same profile as the wall around it, usually on a scrap board first to dial in the mix and the pressure. Compound thinned differently or knocked down a few seconds earlier gives a visibly different pattern, so the test board matters.

Then it gets primed. Primer is not optional on a texture match, because fresh compound is far more absorbent than a wall that has been painted three times, and skipping it leaves a dull patch that shows through the topcoat.

When a patch will always show a little

On a wall where the paint has aged or faded, the repair area will be a slightly different colour even with a perfect texture match, because the new paint is the colour the old paint used to be.

Ceilings are harder than walls, because ceiling texture is coarser and daylight rakes across it. Very heavy or unusual textures, and hand applied patterns from a particular plasterer, can be approximated rather than reproduced exactly.

The honest alternative

Where a match will not hold up, the better result is to carry the finish to a natural break. Corner to corner on a wall, or the whole plane on a ceiling. The eye reads an entire surface as intentional and reads a repaired rectangle as a repair.

That is a bigger job on the day. It is also the difference between a room you stop noticing and a room where you always know where the hole was.

One thing to check first on older ceilings

Textured ceilings installed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos, and disturbing them is regulated. We will tell you when testing applies before anything gets scraped or sanded.
