Will Maryland pay to remove lead paint hazards from a house?

It can, if the home was built before 1978 and sits in Maryland outside Baltimore City. The Maryland Lead Hazard Reduction Grant, run by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) with HUD funding, pays up to $25,000 per property for a lead hazard assessment, full remediation and clearance testing. Homeowners and landlords can both apply. DHCD decides who gets it, and these figures were current as of October 2026.

What the grant pays for

Three steps, in order. An assessment finds where the lead hazards are. Remediation removes or controls them. Clearance testing afterwards confirms the home is safe to live in again.

The house has to have been built before 1978.

The amount and the deadline

Up to $25,000 per property. DHCD lists funding as available until April 1, 2029.

Who DHCD says qualifies

Maryland homeowners and landlords, anywhere in the state except Baltimore City. The application goes to Maryland DHCD, and DHCD decides eligibility and the amount.

Who has to do the lead work

The program requires a licensed and accredited lead abatement contractor for the work. We are not one, and lead abatement is not something we sell, so the grant-funded part of the job goes to a contractor with that accreditation.

Landlords and the order of the work

A Maryland landlord with an older unit can use the grant on a rental as well as a home they live in. Sequence the job so the money goes where it is meant to go: lead contractor first, clearance test second, our crew third. If our crew opens a wall or pulls up an old floor before clearance, that disturbs the very paint the grant is paying to deal with.

Where we fit

DHCD has not approved, listed or enrolled us for this grant, and filling in the application is yours to do, not ours.

Kitchens, bathrooms and floors in pre-1978 houses are where old paint tends to show up, once cabinets come off and walls are opened. The grant covers that portion. The remodel is our part: after the lead contractor finishes and the rooms pass clearance, we build the new kitchen, bathroom or floors, or turn the rental unit over for the next tenant.

We hold a Maryland contractor license. Book a walkthrough and a priced, line by line estimate of our side of the job arrives by text a day or two later, kept apart from anything the lead contractor would do.
