Will USDA's Section 504 program pay for home repairs?
It can, if you own and live in a home in a USDA eligible rural area and can't get affordable credit elsewhere. USDA Rural Development's Section 504 Home Repair program lends up to $40,000 at 1 percent to repair, improve or modernize a home, and grants up to $10,000 to remove health and safety hazards. USDA decides who qualifies, and these figures were current as of October 2026.
What USDA lists
The loans are for repairing, improving or modernizing the home. The grants are for removing health and safety hazards. The uses USDA lists include roof repair, structural improvements, electrical repairs, furnace replacement, and plumbing and septic repairs.
The amounts
A grant of up to $10,000. A loan of up to $40,000 at 1 percent fixed over 20 years. Or both together, up to $50,000.
Who USDA says qualifies
You own the home and live in it, it sits in a USDA eligible rural area, and you cannot get affordable credit elsewhere. Grants add two conditions. You are 62 or older, and your income is very low for your county.
USDA draws the rural map and the county income lines, so whether your address counts is their answer, not ours. The application goes to USDA Rural Development.
How the contractor gets paid
USDA pays the contractor after final inspection. Until the job passes, the contractor carries it.
That makes the written scope matter. If the inspector, you and the contractor all read the same itemized list, there is no argument at the end about what finished means.
Where we fit
Nothing on this page means USDA has approved or listed us, and we do not file the application for you.
Our group handles the roof, plumbing and heating work on USDA's list, alongside the structural rebuilds, bathrooms and kitchens on this site, so one walkthrough can price the whole repair. Electrical and septic repairs are not work we sell.
After the walkthrough, the written estimate comes by text within 24 to 48 hours with the scope itemized, ready to take to USDA.
