Do I need to move out during a remodel?
Usually not. Single room projects and most bathroom and basement work are liveable with containment and a bit of planning. The ones that are genuinely hard are a whole-home renovation, a kitchen if you have nowhere else to cook, and any job where the only bathroom is out of service.
What makes a project liveable
Dust containment put up at the work area before anything starts, rather than swept up afterwards. Zip walls, covered floors and a path through the house that stays clear.
Agreed work hours, so you know when the noise starts and stops. Utilities planned, so water and power are not off without warning.
Daily cleanup, which matters more to how a project feels than almost anything else.
The hard ones
A kitchen. Plan the stretch with no kitchen before demolition, not during it. A temporary setup somewhere else in the house with the fridge, a microwave and a kettle makes a large difference.
A single bathroom. If it is the only one, that is either a hotel stretch or a very carefully sequenced job.
Whole-home renovations, and anything involving floor refinishing, which needs the space empty and off limits while it cures.
What to do before it starts
Move what you care about out of the work zone yourself rather than having it covered in place. Take down anything on the walls in adjacent rooms, because demolition travels through framing.
Plan for pets, who react badly to strangers and noise, and agree how the crew gets in so you are not tied to the house.
