Should I hire a handyman or a bonded and insured contractor?

A handyman is the right call for small, low risk work with no permit and no trade licence involved. Once the job touches structure, systems, permits, or costs enough that a mistake would hurt, you want a bonded and insured contractor. The difference is not skill. It is who carries the loss when something goes wrong.

What bonded and insured actually means

Insured means general liability coverage, which pays if the contractor damages your property, and workers compensation, which pays if someone is injured on your job.

Workers compensation is the one people underestimate. If an uninsured worker is hurt on your property, the exposure can land on your homeowner policy and on you. That is the risk you are actually buying out of.

Bonded means there is a surety bond behind the work, which gives you a route to recovery if contracted work is not completed as agreed.

Jobs a handyman is right for

Mounting things, small patches, a door that will not latch, replacing a fixture in the same location, caulking, hanging blinds, a punch list of small items around the house.

Paying a full contractor to hang a shelf is a waste of money. We run handyman work ourselves for exactly this reason, so a list of small items does not have to become a project.

The line between the two

Anything that needs a permit. Anything structural. New electrical circuits, gas, and drain work. Roofing. Anything where a mistake causes water to get into the building.

A useful test is what happens if it goes wrong. A shelf falls down and you rehang it. A drain slope done wrong leaks into a ceiling for six months before anybody notices.

Questions worth asking either way

Ask for a current certificate of insurance naming the carriers, and confirm it is current rather than expired. Ask what licences apply to your jurisdiction and check them yourself, because Maryland, DC and Virginia each publish a way to look a contractor up.

Get the scope, the price, the payment schedule and the warranty in writing before you sign. Be wary of a large deposit up front, of pressure to decide today, and of anyone who will not put the scope on paper.

We provide our certificate of insurance on request, and licence and registration details come with any written estimate.
